A World War 1 veteran, Dermody played pro basketball around Detroit in the 1920's. He played with Pulakski Post when they joined the ABL in 1925, playing five games on a road trip out east before getting released. He was resigned in February and played in the team's final two games of the season. He returned for one for ABL season with the club in 1926.

He later worked as a real estate agent in Detroit before moving to Florida in 1950.

Joe married Marie Wilson in 1922 and they had a son and a daughter.
