The youngest of three sons born to John and Hilday Hartelius, Carl played basketball around Illinois and Indiana in the 1920's.
In January of 1929, Hartelius committed three armed robberies, using a cigarette case in lieu of a gun. In the third robbery, a policeman happened to show up across the street from the store Hartelius was in process of robbing, and fled. The shopowner yelled to the patrolman for assistance, and the officer gave chase. He managed to fire a shot that struck Hartelius in the foot and was able to apprehend him. He pleaded guilty and was sentenced to ten years in Joliet State Prison. He died in Tampa in 1967.
