Born to Emil and Annie Guenther, Dutch learned to play basketball in church leagues around his native Springfield, Massachusetts, the birthplace of the game. He signed on to play with the Red Tops when he was 18, and played pro basketball for the next decade with various teams, including Boston, Cleveland and Chicago of the ABL.
