Born to Charles and Leota in Elwood, Indiana, Gullion grew up in New Castle, Indiana.
He left Cornell to serve as an officer in the U.S. Army Air Corps. When he returned, he coached two years at UConn befor heading to Washington U in Missouri.
In January of 1959, Coach Gullion suffered a fatal heart attack at his home. He was 58.
Married Elizabeth Crosbie in 1925 and they had one son and one daughter.
