Born to Bernard and Barbara Berens. Went to St. Mary's High School in Lancaster, Ohio. "Beanie" was a star at Ohio University (Class of '35). He returned to coach at St. Mary's before becoming a teacher and coach at the Ohio Boys Industrial School where he stayed for ten years. After briefly returning to Lancaster schools to teach in 1952, he became a regional director back at the BIS and Juvenile Diagnostic Center in Lancaster in 1954. He died in Albuquerque, New Mexico, in 1979.


Married to Beryle (1913-2003) on July 18, 1936, and they had a daughter, Barbara Lynn Berens Lehmann. They divorced in 1962.
