Austing attended the University of Cincinnati where he was named All-Star and All Ohio. He was also a skilled tennis player. After some brief pro and semi-pro basketball, he worked at Wilson Sporting Goods until his retirement. He even played on a senior basketball team in 1985. Austing died of a stroke in 1992.

He was married to Marcella Willke Austing (1911-1991) and had two daughters, Lois and Susan.
