Gene Mechling was born in Hopewell, Ohio, the son of Homer (1876-1954) and Gertrude Mechling (1881-1964). He graduated from Capital University in Columbus, Ohio, in 1932. He coached high school basketball somewhere in western Ohio prior to 1942, when he was an instructor at Chillicothe High School as well as an official for highs school basketball. He was married to Eleanor (1908-1990) and died in Venice, Florida, in 1975.
