Calihan served in the U.S. Navy during World War 2, and after the war returned to the NBL and played for Chicago. After his basketball career, he returned to his alma mater to coach for 20 years.In 1977, the University of Detroit named their basketball arena after Calihan.
He married Virginia and had two daugher, Colleen and Susan, and a son, Robert.
