The youngest of eight children born to Edward (1879-1963) and Clidie (1886-1953) Behr. He played on season for Hammond before entering military service. He served in the U.S. Army during World War 2. His oldest brother Grover played basketball at Franklin College.
Behr married Vivian Lunsford (1919-1971) in 1944 and they had two sons, Robert and Edward, and two daughters, Vicki Robley and Pamela Day. Vivian was killed in a house fire in 1971. Behr later remarried, tying the knot with Rosemary Cosgrove Sims (1921-2008).
