Born to Lorain and Ida Pederson, Pederson played at Western before becoming their head coach. He left there to be player/coach for Oshkosh for two years. In 1941, he became head football coach at Mount Union College, and stayed there through 1948 season (except for when he served in the U.S. Navy in World War 2, where he received a Silver Star, Purple Heart, 2 Oak Clusters and Presidential Unit citation.). From there, he took the head football coach job at Marshall for a couple seasons before returning to Western to lead their gridiron squad.
