Hapac was an All-American at Illinois before joining the Bruins. In his senior year, Illinois was playing at Minnesota and his old coach from Morton, William McBurney, has driving up to see him play but was killed in a car accident on the way. Hapac also played minor league baseball at this time in the Detroit Tigers farm system.
After serving in the U.S. Army during World War 2, he returned to the NBL for three more seasons. He coached basketball at Morton until his death in 1967 at 49 years of age of an undisclosed rare disease.
He was married to Ruth (1924-2000)
