One of five children, his brother Lermound played basketball at Purdue, and another brother, Lester, was a star player at the high school in Winamac, and both Lester and Marvin played on the 1931-32 Winamac team that made the Indiana State Basketball finals.
He married Derexa Gray on September 23, 1939, whom he met while at Ball State. At some point he remarried to Mildred (1912-2005), whom he met in California after moving there following his service in the U.S. Navy during World War 2. Not sure if he divorced Derexa or if he was widowed.
