Born to Jacob and Catherine Mueller in 1916, Mueller went to Western on a basketball scholarship. After graduation, he moved to Wisconsin where he played for Oshkosh. He moved back to Texas (and New Mexico) and worked in the oil industry until his retirement in 1981. He died in 2012 at 95 years of age.

Mueller married Frieda Wilke in 1939 and they had two daughters: Nancy Harlan and Kathryn Roper.
