Born to Scottish immigrants Robert and Mary Tough in New York City, Bob's father died before his 5th birthday. He played college basketball at St John's, and then played professionally for Brooklyn and Trenton before heading to the Midwest to join with the Pistons in Fort Wayne. After bouncing around a bit for 8 seasons, he retired from the game and eventually moved out to the San Francisco area, where he died in 1999.
