Coven was a fine hurdler in high school as well as a basketball player. He attended North Carolina, but transferred to Toledo after a year. He served in the army during World War 2, and went back to school at Baldwin-Wallace when he returned stateside. After playing for the Royals he joined up with the World Basketball Association, but the league disintegrated before play began. He decided to quit basketball for more stable employment.
Wilbur and his wife had two sons.
