Born to Judge Frank and May Belle Ball, Ball served as an aviation machinist in the U.S. Navy during World War 2. He would attend API (now Auburn) and would play several seasons of minor league baseball as well as a year with the Birmingham Vulcans in the Southern Basketball League. Ball became a teacher and coach as well as a sports agent.
