Hodges entered the army after a few years at East Mississippi Junior College. After World War 2, he enrolled at Delta State to finish his education. He joined the Jackson Senators in mid-February of 1948 and made an immediate impact, scoring 39 points in his professional debut against Nashville. Five days later, he would score a league-record 50 points against Mobile. He finished the season averaging 26.9 points per game, but was unavailable to play multiple times due to family issues or teaching commitments.
He went on to coach for many years at the high school level, winning two state titles, and eventually would be inducted into the Mississippi Association of Coaches Hall of Fame in 2004, a few months before his death.
