The 6'4 Caldwell went to Sunflower Junior College (now Mississippi Delta Community College) before serving in the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War 2. He played a couple seasons in the Southern Basketball League after the war.

Pete married Trudi Mae Winningham in 1949 and they had one son and one daughter.
