Dean played baseball and basketball in high school before heading to Howard College (now Samford University). After two years of college, he entered the U.S. Navy to serve during World War 2. After the war, he returned to Howard to finish his education. When the school basketball season ended in February of 1948, he signed with the Birmingham Vulcans to play with the team in the Southern League playoffs. The Vulcans had been beset by injuries and half the team had not played in the regular season.
