Born to Alex and Stella Kontos, Kontos graduated from high school and went into the U.S. Army Air Corps for World War 2, training in Boise, Idaho. After the war, he played some basketball for his hometown Vulcans for a season. He wound up running the family fruit business, the Kontos Fruit Company, until retiring in 2001. He was a couple weeks past his 97th birthday when he died in 2018.
He and his wife, Annette, had four sons and three daughters.
