Born in rural Rutherford County to Nevil and Freddie Mae Sanford, Hoyte was playing basketball in the Rutherford County Indie league in 1948 before signing with the Nashville Vols of the Southern League in February of that year.He played in 2 game for the Vols, scoring twice. He would serve in the U.S. Army, being stationed in post-war Germany before returning to Tennessee where he would work as a Highway Patrolman.

Hoyte married Betty Adams and they had a son and a daughter,
