Scobey lettered in basketball, baseball and track while at Lipscomb. He transferred to Vanderbilt after a couple years at Lipscomb. Scobey entered the U.S. Navy during World War 2, and after the war finished his education at Vanderbilt.

After a stint with the Nashville Vols in 1947-48, Scobey worked as an accountant and eventually would become the vice-mayor of Nashville. He also was football official in the SEC for 25 years.

Scobey had two sons and three daughters.
