Gartman joined the Vulcans after finishing his eligiblity at Howard in March of 1948. He would play for the Vulcans in the Southern League playoffs, scoring 4 points in each the two games he appeared in. He would go on to coach football, baseball and basketball at Howard before sticking to coaching football for the rest of his coaching career. He served in the Army Air Corps during World War 2.

Earl was married to Mildred and they had one son, but the couple divorced in 1956. He remarried to Mellie.
