Born to Henry and Minini Valentin, Vallee served in the U.S. Army during World War two and played minor league baseball for a few years, including a couple years with the Tacoma Tigers which is what brought him to playing basketball with the Mountaineers in December of 1947. He would go on to work in structural steel and involved in many construction projects in the Pacific Northwest.

Frank Shone was born in Granite City, Illinois, and was a baseball player with eyes on the major leagues. He was signed in 1939 by Connie Mack's Philadelphia Athletics and was assigned to the Johnstown club in the Class-D Pennsylvania State League. He moved on to the Cincinnati farm system on 1940, playing for Reds' Lenoir , Ogden and Columbia affiliates. 1943 found him out west, signing on with the Portland Beavers of the PCL. A quick baserunner and decent hitting outfielder, Shone stuck with the Beavers for 4 seasons, hitting .304 in 1945 with 39 stolen bases. At this time, the PCL's caliber of play was so great that they petitioned to be recognized as a third major league, but were denied and classified as AAA, or the highest ranking of a minor league. In his four years in Portland, Shone had become quite popular in the town and surrounding areas, and in the fall of 1946 was offered the job of being the general manager for the Salem Trailblazers basketball team, giving him a job during baseball's off-season. The Salem club quickly ran into attendance problems, and therefore financial problems. He found himself pressed into duty in two games by head coach Len Yandle, scoring no points in his brief appearance on the floor. On January 28, 1947, Shone was optioned to Beaumont (Texas) in the New York Giants farm system, getting him even closer to major league baseball. Not long after leaving the Trailblazers, the basketball team merged with Spokane and eventually failed to finish the 1946-47 season.

When Salem merged with Spokane in February of 1947, Shone found himself out of basketball. Looking forward to baseball season, Shone batted only .243 at Beaumont and was let go by the Giants. He wound up signing with the Albuquerque Dukes in 1948, and played sparingly in 1948 and 1949. In December of 1949, a few months after the close of the Dukes season, Shone was killed in a one-car accident just outside of Albuquerque. He was 32 years old.

Born to Raymond and Katheryn Hedderick, Herm grew up in Erie, Pennsylvania,
Hedderick played both baseball and basketball while at Canisius. He was drafted by the Celtics in the 1952 NBA Draft and was also signed by the Cincinnati Reds that year, pitching for their Class B team in Salisbury. After serving in the military in the Korean War, he was traded to the Knicks in the 1954-55 season and appeared in five games. He would play one more season of minor league baseball with the Reds farm system in 1955, too.

He and his wife, Sally, had a son and a daughter.

Born to John and Jewel George, George played football, basketball and baseball as a youth, earning a scholarship offer to play football at Notre Dame. He decided to so to LaSalle where he played baseball and basketball. He played at La Salle for two years before joining the U.S. Army. After being discharged, he decided to forego his remaining years of collegiate elgibility and play basketball professionally.

George would play over five seasons with the Philadelphia Warriors, twice being named to the All-Star Game. A dependable ball handler, George average 10.7 points per game with Warriors before being traded to the New York Knicks on January 27, 1959, for Guy Sparrow. He played for the Knicks before retiring after the 1960-61 season.

In 1954, he played catcher for the Philadelphia Athletic's Class-B farm team in Lancaster in the Piedmont League.

After leaving the NBA, George moved to Illinois to work as a sales consultant. He would retire in 1986 and move from Winfield, Illinois, to Florida, where he died a few years later at the age of 60.

Out of Homestead, Pennsylvania, Asmongs played football, baseball and basketball at tiny Alliance College, a liberal arts school in Cambridge Springs, PA. In the summer of 1947, Asmonga signed with the Boston Red Sox and he was then declared ineligible to continue playing sports at Alliance. The righthander began his baseball days at Wellsville in the PONY league (Class D). Over the next few seasons, he would rise through the Red Sox farm system to the AAA level in 1951, but never made the parent club. The conference scoring champ on the hardwood back at Alliance, Asmonga had signed on to play with Altoona in the All-American Basketball League and played hoop in the off season. He eventually found his way to the Baltimore Bullets in December of 1953. He played in seven games, scoring 5 points, before being released.

He became a teacher as well as coaching the baseball and basketball teams at Belle Vernon HS, where he stayed as a coach until 1988 and taught until 1993. Don died in 2014.


Don married Bernice Staisey and they had two sons and four daughters.

Born to John and Maggie Woodward, Ray served during World War 2. He would play briefly for his hometown entry in the Southern Basketball League, the Laurel Oilers. He played minor league baseball for 6 years, pitching for the independent Tampa Smokers after a couple years in the Cubs farm system. He pitched very well with Tampa, winning 17 games in 1950 and 16 in 1951, but at 31 years of age he didn't get shot with a major league club.

He married Edna Yarbrough in 1948 and they had two sons.

Whittaker made his name in high school on the baseball diamond. The pitcher and infielder would be signed by the New York Giants after leading his Jesuit team to the American Legion tournament in 1945. After being rocked in two appearances with the Giants' farm club in Class-B Trenton, he was shipped down to their Class-D team in Springfield, Ohio. He would win ten games there but would be let go at the end of the season. He would play basketball with the New Orleans Sports in 1948-49, averaging 6.3 points in the 26 games I could find a box score for.

Engle graduated from Washington HS in New York City and signed to play baseball with the Philadelphia Phillies. He played two years in the Phillies farm system before World War 2 intervened and Engle went into the U.S. Navy. He spent part of World War 2 stationed in Panama. After the war, he returned to baseball, signing with the Montgomery Rebels baseball team. The 6'2 205-pound first baseman wound up taking to Montgomery, playing basketball for a local semi-pro team and meeting his wife, Dorothy. In 1947, he was named the playing - manager with nearby Andalusia team, and batted .308 and was named to the all-star team. The Detroit Tigers picked him up and he went to their Class-D affiliate in Thomasville, Georgia. After the 1948 season, Engle found himself playing basketball with the Montgomery Rebels of the Southern Basketball League. He would play one more season of minor league baseball before the Tigers hired him to manage their team in Butler, Pennsylvania, but he was let go after a 13-19 start.

Engle was active in the Montgomery athletic scene, starting work at the Boys Club in Mongtomery in 1954. He would eventually become the director at the Boys' Club in Montgomery. In November of 1977, Engle went to the club to jog in the gymnasium. He suffered a massive heart attack and died almost immediately. He was 55 years of age.

Bob married Dorothy Green (1922-2001) in 1946 and they had two sons.

Born to Ishmael and Juanita Tanner, the Tanner family moved to Tampa, Florida, by 1935.

Scouted and signed by Brooklyn Dodgers scout Wid Matthews, he left high school one credit shy of graduating in order to pursue a baseball career. Classified by the draft board af 4-F due to an ear issue, Tanner bounced around the Dodgers organization for years. He was suspended by organized baseball by jumping his contract and signing to play in the Mexican League in 1946, but that suspension was lifted and he resumed his baseball career. He was thought to certainly be a member of the Dodgers one day, but it never came to be, only reaching AAA level of the minor leagues. A very good basketball player in high school, his 6'6 frame got him a contract with Memphis in the Southern Basketball League in 1947, averaging 3.8 points in the 14 games I found he played in.
After ending his baseball career, Tanner stayed around Tampa, coaching and raising his family and scouting for the Cincinnati Reds. He died in 1978 at the age of 53 following a lengthy illness.

He and his wife, Barbara, had five sons and one daughter. One son, Jim, was drafted by the Detroit Tigers in the 3rd round of the 1967 draft but he never got higher than their Class-AA team in Montgomery. His brother, Rudy, also played minor league baseball.

Born and raised in Minneapolis, Sanders entered the U.S. Navy and served during World War 2. He went to Vanderbilt during the war for Naval training, it is was there that he played semi-pro basketball for the Junior Vols. A

good football and baseball player, also, Sanders would play minor league baseball for a few years, including time in both the St Louis Browns and Cleveland Indians farm systems. He played basketball with the Nashville Vols for half a season. Despite hitting .321 in four seasons in the minors, he would be sold to Oklahoma City in 1949, and from there would find his way back north. He landed in Merrill, Wisconsin, where he played on the local independent team for a few seasons. Sanders would eventually be inducted into the Wisconsin Baseball Hall of Fame. He would work for many years as a sales representative for Semling-Menke and Wisconsin Window Unit.

Sanders died in 2012 at the age of 89. He married Janet Mueller and they had one son and two daughters. Widowed, he would remarry to Jennie.

Born to Gene and Donie Reid, Russell was a natural athlete from New Albany, Mississippi. He lettered in football, baseball, basketball and track entering Holmes Junior College after graduating. He served in the Army Air Corps during World War 2, and after the war attended Ole Miss. After college, he played a couple years of professional basketball in the Southern League and also played one season of minor league baseball in the Washington Senators farm system. He coached football and basketball many years at the high school and collegiate level.

He married Imogene Panell (1927-2015) and they had three daughters.

Mims was a Birmingham native who was a minor league pitcher in the Pittsburgh Pirates farm system through the 1940's. In the off-season after 1947, he would play pro basketball with the Whiz Kids in the Southern Basketball League.  He got as high as the Pirates' AAA team in Indianapolis in 1950, but never made the parent club.

Mims served during World War 2 at the end of the war.

Right out of high school, this Montgomery athlete was signed by the Chicago Cubs baseball club and sent to their Nashville affiliate.  In 1945 he would find himself in the Brooklyn Dodgers farm system and over the next few years the catcher climbed his was to Class AA. However, that is as high as he would get in the minor leagues. In the off-season of 1947-48, he would play basketball first for the Memphis Legionnaires and when the team moved to Mobile, we went with them but left the team shortly thereafter. He would make a brief appearance with the Birmingham Vulcans at the end of the Southern League season before heading back to baseball. However, this off-season saw him sold to the Cleveland Indias and he struggled though the 1948 season before being let go. He bounced around the low minors until 1950 when he was let go and done with baseball at the age of 24.

Long became a restaurateur in Montgomery for many years and also served on the Alabama Board of Pardons and Paroles.

He was married to Murial Savage in 1953 and they had four children.

Howard served in the U.S. Navy for seven years, being discharged in 1944. He immediately went to the baseball diamond, signing to play with the Nashville Vols baseball team as a first baseman. He had been offered a deal with the Yankees' farm team in Norfolk, Virignia, but chose to stay in Nashville. He was sold to Lockport in the PONY league before being released. From there, he moved to play with Kinsport in the class-D Appalachian League.

Howard's athletic dreams were hampered by numerous run-ins with the law. In spring of 1945, he confessed to multiple burglaries and larcenies. He would escape from the county jail in 1952, only to be captured a short while later.
