Fleming was a local athlete in Birmingham who starred in baseball and basketball at Howard College in Birmingham (now known as Samford University.) He served in the USMC during World War 2. After the war, while going for his Master's degree at Auburn, he played minor league baseball Opelisa in the George-Florida League as well as playing basketball around Birmingham.
He and his brother, Frank (who was a teammate of Wheeler's with the Vulcans) would start their own company, Flemming Transfer, in the late 40's. A high school coach, Wheeler also owned a farm for many years before finally selling it off. He died in 2015 at the age of 95.
Wheeler never married.
