Born in Westfield to Robert and Lucy Hubbard, Hubbard servied in the military during World War 2 before going on to play minor league baseball in the Brooklyn Dodgers system in addition to a couple seasons of professional basketball. He was a coach and parks and recreation worker in West Springfield, and worked as a test engineer at Pratt and Whitney until retiring in 1977.
He married Doris in 1948 and they had two daughters, Nancy and Lynn (d.1956), and three sons, Robert, Gregory and Barry.
