Paul was born to Virgil and Stella Cloyd in Madison, Wisconsin, and went to UW. He dropped out after hurting his ankle. He served in the war during World War 2 before embarking on a career in professional basketball. After four seasons, he left the game and started his own insurance company.
He married Jean Widen on January 6, 1940, and they had two sons and two daughters.
