Some places say he was born in Spartanburg. Although he most definitely grew up in Spartanburg, Social Security records say he was born in Danville, Virginia.
He went to Spartanburg Junior College before transferring to Tennessee where he wound up captain of the basketball team. He played professional basketball for a couple years, as well as playing semi-pro and minor league baseball for a few years.

He was married to Lillian Davis (1926-1986) and had two sons and two daughters.
