1950-51 HARTFORD HURRICANES
EASTERN BASKETBALL LEAGUE - CONNECTICUT

Finished: 8-14 .364, 6th place

Hartford was a late addition to the Eastern League. Having dropped out of the ABL the previous basketball season, the Hurricanes stepped up and joined the EBL when the league pleaded to add a team in the Capital City in order to even start play. Hartford drew very poorly, and the team quit prior to their final game of the season.

Born to John and Katherine Kubachka, Joe graduated from Avella HS and headed to Waynesburg College but joined the U.S. Army after one year to fight World War 2. He went to Springfield College after the war where he starred on the school's basketball team. After receiving his Bachelor's Degree, he stayed on at Springfield as an assistant coach for the basketball team. He also played for the  Manchester team in the American Basketball League at this time. He became a coach and teacher at Hartford HS, where he won two state titles. He also helped run summer camps with member of the Boston Celtics and coached the Hartford Capitols of the Eastern League.

He married Dorothy Dermotta in 1945 and they had three children.

Ablondi was born in Italy, and his family immigrated to the U.S., settling in Hell's Kitchen in New York City. He attended Georgetown on a athletic scholarship, and played a couple seasons in the ABL after graduating. He got his law degree from St. John's University in 1950 and focused his practice on international trade la, moving to Washington, D.C. He would be appointed by President Richard Nixon to the U.S. International Trade Commission in 1972, and in 1978 founded his own fime, Ablondi, Foster, Sobin & Davidow. 

Albondi died of cancer in 2001.

He was married to Unalane Carter and they had two daughters and a son.

Fran (or Frank) didn't make the Milton HS basketball team in his freshman or sophomore year, but once he finally succeeded, he didn't stop through college. After his freshman year, Walsh went into the Navy at the end of World War 2 and was stationed in Okinawa. He returned to Northeastern, playing both baseball and basketball and would be invited to tryout with the New York Knicks. He was assigned to the Hartford affiliate in the ABL, but never made it to the NBA. He finished his degree at Northeastern served in the navy again during the Korean War. He became a successful bankerat South Boston Savings, being promoted to Vice President before retiring in 1989. In retirement, he spent his winter months in Naples, Florida. He died after suffering a stroke in 2009 at 81 years of age.

He married Carolyn Turner in 1954 and they had three sons.

Seagrist was a teammate with future major league pitcher Howie Judson on the Auto-Lite basketball team. He went to Northern Illinois where he was hampered by a shoulder injury for a good part of his freshman year. In February of 1948, it was discovered that Seagrist had been playing semi-pro basketball in a tournament in Aurora, Illinois, and was declared ineligible and booted from the Northern squad. He transferred to Texas Wesleyan next season, and after a decent sophomore season, the 6'8 center got the interest of the Boston Celtics and the New York Knicks. Seagrist signed with the Celtics and was assigned to the Hartford Hurricanes for the start of the 1949-50 ABL season. He appeared in three games before being let go. He caught in the Eastern League of Connecticut with New Britain to finish the season. He left basketball and worked for many years as a successful salesman and sales executive.

John married Barbara "Cookie" Kuhn, the daughter of Frances Kuhn, former mayor of Woodstock, Illinois, in 1958 and they had three sons.

LIU's high-scored in '48 and '49, Lipman played some pro basketball in the ABL after school. In March of 1951, Lipman was arrested on bribery charges for point shaving in the huge scandal that rocked the collegiate basketball world in the early 50's. He confessed to fixing games, and was given a suspended sentence in December of 1951 in exchange for his cooperation.  He was living in Hollywood, Florida, at the time of his arrest. Lipman came from a wealthy family and lived the rest of his days in Florida.

Born to Sophie and Harry Hammock, Hammock played basketball and baseball at Seton Hall Prep. He played both sports at St. Bonaventure for a year before joining the U.S. Army. After the war, he enrolled at Seton Hall where he played both sports with great acclaim. After graduating, he signed to pitch for Wytheville in the Class-D Blue Ridge League in 1949. He pitched well, going 7-4 with a 2.77 ERA. After baseball season, he played pro basketball with the Hartford Hurricanes and the Trenton Tigers in the ABL. 1950's baseball season saw him with Bristol in the Colonial League (Class-B but unaffiliated with any major league club.) That was his last season in organized baseball, although he apparently played some more basketball in the ABL with Carbondale in 1951-52. In 1960, Hammock moved to Oklahoma City where he owned his own insurance agency. He died in 1965 at the young age of 40.

Dick and his wife, Minna, had four sons and a daughter.

Brofman attended Brooklyn JC and transferred to LIU before joining the army to serve in World War 2. After the war, Brofman played with Cohoes in the New York League and was signed by the New York Knicks in the fall of 1949 but was released prior to the start of the basketball season. He signed with Hartford in the ABL. He was let go in December of that year to make room for Dutch Garfinkel and he return to Cohoes to play with the ABL's Marras in February of 1950, He coached one game, but when the team disintegrated, he played one game for the Scranton Miners.

After playing basketball at baseball at La Salle, Adair was signed by the New York Giants baseball club in 1949 and pitched for their Trenton affiliate in Class B. After the 1949 season, he signed with the Philadelphia Warriors and was farmed out to the Hartford Hurricanes in the ABL. He was there about a month before being let go. In 1950, the Giants promoted him to the Sioux City team in the Western League where he would have a 14-8 record. He entered the Marines after the season and served at Parris Island during the Korean War. In 1952, he returned to baseball to give it a go, but never progressed higher than AA. He was let go in 1954. He would work at RCA for many years, and refereed high school basketball games in Philadelphia.

He married Betty Jane Smith and they had three sons and two daughters.

Former ABL player and Cohoes Mastadons coach Tubby Raskin was hired to lead the Hurricanes this year, but was replaced after a poor start by Ralph Kaplowicz. The club fared no better, and was outplayed in every aspect all season long. Only once did they manage to strong together consecutive victories.

The 6'1, 170 pound athlete from Flushing NY served in the U.S. Navy during  World War 2. After the war, he played basketball and tennis at Columbia. After his undergraduate studies, he played a little basketball for the Hartford Hurricanes. He would get his medical degree and in 1970 he moved to the San Francisco area to continue to practice medicine.

He married Frances (1928-2019) and they had three daughters.

He was drafted by the Boston Celtics (48th overall) but did not make the team. He played for Bridgeport and then in the Eastern League before returning home to Akron. He worked for many years at Goodyear.

He and his wife, Marjorie, had one son and one daughter.

Kosior went to Hopkins Academy where he played basketball, baseball and soccer. After graduating, he enlisted in the Marines and served his country during World War 2. After the war, he went to American International College in Springfield. He graduated in 1948 with a degree in accounting, and played basketball with the Hartford Hurricanes in 1948-49. He was announced to be the first head coach for Westfield State in 1950, where he also taught and coached baseball. He would coach and teach at Holyoke and Trade HS before becoming a school administrator.

He married Agnes Aubey in 1966.

The 5'9, 140 pound Pat Mazzarella served in the Army from 1943 to 1946 as the country was in World War 2. After the war, he played some pro basketball. He was the leaguye MVP in the 1948-49 season with the Wallingford Veterans of the Eastern League (also known as the Connecticut League and not to be confused with the larger Eastern Basketball League). He also played for the Hurricanes, appearing in a couple of games late in the ABL season. He would return to military duty in 1950 as the U.S. became involved in the Korean War.
Mazzarella was also quite a golfer in the area. In 1949, he came out of nowhere to challenge for the Connecticut Amateur Golf title, losing in the finals. He would go on to win many golf tournaments over the years, and served as the vice-president of the Central Connecticut Golf Association. He would work many years as a grammar school teacher in New Britain, dying in 1989.

He married Antonia (Ann) Gagliardi (1922-2012) and they had one daughter, Patricia.

Doc Hurley was a larger-than-life figure in the Hartford sporting community. Nicknamed "Doc" by his father at the age of six, Hurley would letter in four sports (football, baseball, basketball and track) in high school. The 6'6, 220-pound Hurley would star at Virginia State before returning to Hartford, where he played with the ABL's Hartford team. He also played semi-pro football and baseball in Connecticut as well as Virginia. (Hurley also served in the Marines during World War 2.)

Back in Hartford, Hurley set up the Doc Hurley Scholarship Fund to help disadvantaged youths in Hartford realize their dream of going to college. Using events such as basketball tournaments to raise money, Hurley was able to help hundreds of kids.



Hurley died in 2014 at the age of 91.

Tough guy to track down, but after rummaging through issue after issue of the Trinity College Newspapers, I found an interview that gave me his month and year of birth. That opened the door.

Faber played baseball and basketball at Newtown High School in Queens before entering the U.S. Navy and their V-12 training program at Cornell. He managed to play 4 games for Cornell, and was then transferred to the V-12 program at small Trinity College in Hartford. He stayed at Trinity when his service was done, and when he graduated he had scored more points than any other Trinity player. The 6'2, 200-pound center went on to play for the Hartford Hurricanes in the ABL. In 1969, he was working in New York as an executive Vice President for Computer Tutors Corporation.

Decsi went to Bucknell while he was in the V-12 Program for World War 2. He also attended Harvard for a year while in the ROTC program. He graduated with B.A. in Econimics of 1948 and would play pro basketball for a few years. He would work in the insurance industry for 37 years.

He married Ellen Canny (d. 2002) and they had two daughters and one son.
