Born to Wilfred and Ruth Durkee and raised in Burlingame, California, "Bill" was an outstanding high school athlete, playing basketball and football as well as running track. He moved on to Cal, where he played competed in those three sports as well. In 1942, he joined the U.S. Army and was stationed in the Pacific. He return to Cal after his discharge, and went on to play with the Lakers in 1947. He moved to Las Vegas in 1954, where he worked at the Nevada Test Site, as well as being a very active softball player.
He married Lois Wentz on October 13, 1961 and they had two sons and two daughters.
