Born to Concetta and Ciro Forestieri, Jack played basketball and football at Benton Harbor HS before going to Notre Dame. After one year with the Irish, he left school to pursue a professional basketball career. He later owned a supermarket and a bar, and also worked as a bailiff.
He married Mary Topping (d. 2011) in 1948 and they had three daughters and three sons.
