Born to Edwin and Frida Menke, Menke starred on the court at Dundee HS and was a member of the "Whiz Kids" team at Illinois, which was broken up in 1943 by World War 2. He served in the European Theater and played professionally briefly before teaching and coaching high school. He later joined with his brother and father to work with the family building business.
He was married to Betty Naker (d.1976) and had thee kids, Charlotte, Scott and Eric. He remarried in 1978, to Janette Bazsali.
