Born to Thomas and Marion Carey in northern Michigan, Carey starred on the hardwood in high school before heading to Alma College, where he played football, basketball, track and tennis. He entered the U.S. Navy following graduation, and after World War 2, he played professionally basketball briefly for the A.C.'s. He then coached and taught at Midland High School for 20 years.
He married Lois Goldie (d. 1989) on November 14, 1943, and after her passing, married Patricia Fawcett in 1990. He and Lois had three daughters.
