Born to Robert and Minnie Ramsey in Springfield, Illinois, Ramsey ran track and played football basketball at Bradley. His collegiate career interrupted by four years in World War 2, he returned to finish school before a career in athletics. Aside from two seasons of pro basketball, he also played for seven years in the NFL and AAFC, mainly with the Chicago Cardinals, and another three in the Canadian Football League. He later taught and coached back at Lanphier High School. He was diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease in 1991, and died a few months after a fall at his nursing home.
He married Elsie Krieger (d. 2002) on June 10, 1955 and they had three sons.
