Strong was a star baseball player in the Negro Leagues, playing from 1937-1951 with an interruption to serve his country in World War 2. His drinking may have kept him out of the major leagues, but he was a fine athlete, playing for twenty years for the Globetrotters.
He died penniless in 1978 at 62 years of age.
