Born to Clarence and Bodie Jones in Kentucky, the Jones family moved to Toledo, where Jones attended Scott HS. He attended college at Knoxville, and played basketball there as well as professionally for barnstorming teams and became one of the first 10 black players in the NBL. He opened his own insurance agency, as well as working for Lucas County and the city of Toledo. Jones was elected to the Ohio State Senate in 1968.
He married Lovell Barber on June 13, 1963, and they had three sons; Curtis, George and William, and four daughters, K. Laverne Redden, Sarah, Marilyn and Marsha Jones.
