Update:
Indianapolis Star article from 1941 makes reference to Howard Hoffman being the grandson of John Bradford, and a little more reading yields John's daughter Reba, who would then match to the Reba Hoffman that I originally theorizes was Howie's mother. So in short, my above possibility was accurate.

Hoffman served in the army during World War 2. He worked as a farmer until his retirement in 1987. Married to Patsy Ann Hempfling (1923-1999), they had two sons.
