A basketball player at Astoria HS and Oregon State, Palmberg and his two brothers, William and Henry, became basketball team owners when they put the Astoria franchise together in the Pacific Coast League. Wally was not just an owner, but also coach and player. The team had cash flow problems and folded after the first half of the season. He later took the head coaching job at Astoria HS before leaving to enter the U.S. Navy during World War 2.

He and his wife, Lois, had a son and a daughter. Lois passed away in 1958, and Palmberg would remarry twice.

  1. Esther was my father's third wife. My brother's and my mother was our father's first wife Lois who passed away in 1958. He and Ester married when they were in their 70's. Esther had one son with her first husband who had also passed away.
