Born to Charles and Henrietta Schweizer, Maybury attended Southeastern High School in Detroit, but did not make the basketball team because the coach thought him to be too thin. (He was 6'3 and 150 pounds.) He went to CC of Detroit (now Wayne State University) where he picked up the game and wound up being among the high scorers. After graduating, he played pro and semi-pro basketball around the Detroit area.
