A three-year letter winner at Penn, Hashagen coached at Ursinus College before joining the U.S> Navy. After the war, he moved out west where he played some pro basketball and coaching high school before being recalled into active duty. After, he coached for a number of years at Placer College.

He was married to Dorothy Meta (1914-1975)
