Bob played basketball and volleyball at Franklin HS before getting a basketball scholarship at UW. He left after his freshman year, and would later attend Central Washington briefly. He played for Alpine Dairy, and lead the team to a fourth-place finish in the AAU tournament. Aside from his time with Tacoma, he also squared up a lot against the Harlem Globetrotters when they would tour through the area.

Bob was a well-known jazz aficionado, and possess a large collection of rare jazz albums. He was a regular at jazz clubs around Seattle well into his 90's.

Bob and his wife, Sylvia (1920-1994) had five children.
