A center at Oregon, Hays was declared academically ineligible during his freshman year, but returned to start the next three with the varsity squad. After graduating, Hays signed with Astoria, but the team folded half-way into the season. He signed with Portland on February 5, 1948, and lead the team to the Pacific Coast championship. He was named head coach at Junction City HS where he stayed for seven seasons before leaving to focus on his insurance company.
