Born to Loyd and Edna Gentry, Dale went to Washington State where he lettered in football, basketball and baseball. Gentry entered the U.S. Navy for World War 2. After the war, he played three season of pro football with the Los Angeles Dons of the AAFC. He also played for the Spokane Blazers in the Pacific Coast Basketball League after the Spokane and Salem clubs merged. He would later become an assistant coach at WSU.

In June of 1968, Gentry had suffered a heart attack. While recuperating for his cardiac incident, his 16 year-old son James was killed in automobile accident. They following day, after completing the funeral arrangement for James, Dale collapsed, suffering what would be a fatal heart attack,
