Kern went to Cameron Junior College for a year and transferred to A&M. However, he werved in the U.S. Army in World War 2. After the war, he returned to school at Oklahoma A&M (now Oklahoma State) and played on their back-to-back NCAA championship teams. He signed with the Chicago Stags of the BAA in October of 1946, but was cut prior to the season starting. He later worked for ICH Corporation for 20 years before his retirement.
He married Joan and they had five sons and a daughter.
