Born in West Virginia to Samuel and Rosa Mazza, Babe served in the U.S. Navy during World War 2. After playing pro basketball first in the PBLA for Kansas City, and then in the All-American League's Columbus franchise after the PBLA collapsed, Mazza became a teacher and coach at the high school level in West Virginia, Ohio and eventually Florida. He became the AD at Northeast in 1968, retiring from the post in 1983.


He married Margaret Byrne in 1948 and they had a son and a daughter.
