Born to Roy and Martha Cox in Houston, Cox went to Texas and was a member of the short-lived Mavericks. He later was a teacher and coach for the Houston Independent School District. Cox served in the U.S. Army during World War 2.
He married Nelda Birdwell (1928-2013) in 1947 and they had three sons and a daughter.
