Born in Hammond to John and Sophie Dermody, Dermody played football and basketball at Arizona. After serving in the Army during World War 2, Dermody played basketball with the Tomahawks.
Dermody worked for many years at NIPSCO as a general manager and also worked around Indiana as a basketball official at the high school and collegiate level.
He married Jessie Spadler in 1950 and they had two sons and a daughter.
