Born to Olaf and Margaret Andersen, Swede played at San Mateo JC before transferrin to St Mary's. He became the school's freshmen coach after graduating, while playing AAU and semi-pro ball in the area. He became the head coach of St. Mary's varsity team in 1944, and after three years, he went to play pro basketball in the PBLA and then the Pacific League after the PBLA folded. After his basketball days, Swede worked as an insurance salesman.
He was married to Rowena and they had one son.
