Gregg graduated from Missouri where he played basketball and baseball. He played one season of minor league baseball in the Pirates organization before graduating from Mizzou before his country called. Gregg served in the USMC during World War 2, being awarded the Silver Star. After the war, he took the freshman team coaching job at Missouri while playing a little bit professionally. He was hired at Northern Arizona in 1949 as the freshman coach, and took the varsity job a year later, where he stayed for 24 seasons resigning as coach. He stayed on at NAU as golf coach and as an instructor until retiring in 1983.

He married Virginia Wilson in 1946 and they had one son, Herbert, and a daughter, Patricia. After Virginia's passing in 2002, he remarried to Thelma Scott.

His son Herbert was a missionary who was held captive for over 230 days by Chechen rebels.
