Dunlap was a natural athlete, with baseball being his area of expertise. He signed with the Cincinnati Reds out of high school in 1941, but a year later Dunlap entered the USMC to serve his country during World War 2. After the war, he resumed his baseball career. Dunlap spent 11 seasons playing minor league baseball, and played briefly for St Louis Cardinals in 1953. After retiring from baseball, we taught and coached at Occidental College in California from 1954 to 1984. In 1998, he wrote a critically-acclaimed mystery novel, "Kill the Umpire."
He and his wife, Janet, had a son and a daughter.
